UNDERSTANDING AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM
In this article, we have to discuss the education system of American. Before we proceed further firstly, we have to understand the concept of the education system. As what is the education system is all about? Education system generally defines as public schooling, not the private schooling and generally KG or (kinder garden) schooling through the high school programs. This definition clears the concept of the education system as for how it can be defined as. Generally, the schools or we can say school districts are a smaller form of the education system as we compare with the country. Each state has a different education system as it considers it on following parameters:
- Rules and Regulations should be followed in schools.
- Laws and Policies implemented in schools.
- To determine the funding level that includes public funding, allocation of resources and procedures etc.
- Provide different facilities that include transportation, school facilities, and various administrative officers.
- Learning materials, books, computer and import the teaching resources.
- Staffing concept is also important in this concept of the education system.
- Compensation, employees benefits as well as the allocation of human resource is also essential for that.
- Lastly but not least is other contributing elements that are not a part of all points above also crucial for the education system.
Now understanding the American Education System
The concept of the education system in America is not entirely different from another education system. It offers a wide range of choices in a different field for international students. There is a structure for school, programs as well as the location to fill as per their choice not only for international students but also the same for the U.S. as well. As we start to understand the American Education system we should familiarise the things that help to know more about the education plan.
Firstly we have to discuss what type of education structure should be followed by the U.S., So the education structure of U.S. consists of:
- Primary School
- Secondary School
Before the higher education, generally in America, the education structure comprises of primary as well as secondary school.
American student should attend both primary as well as a secondary school for a combined and it should be in 12 Years. These 12 years are generally known as the first through to the twelve grades.
At the age of six or we can say that around six years children begin to go school and it generally is known as primary school, and also we know that primary school is also known as elementary school. Approximately they attend for six years, or we can say a range of 5 to 6 year of primary school when they go to secondary school.
Secondary school also consist of two programs, i.e. firstly is a middle school program and secondly a high school program. Middle school program also commonly known as a junior high school program. A certificate or what we say a Diploma has been awarded from high school. After that, the students graduating from high school or (12th Grade) they may go to college or university for further studies. College or university in America is also known as “higher education”.
Second important part of understanding the American education system is a grading system. When students fill the form for higher education, the university calculates the student’s marks based on the grades or a commonly known as grade point average that generally measures the academic achievement of the student. Typically, the courses are graded on percentages, and these are converted into the letter grades.
Next important thing is the academic year. Generally, in India, the Academic year starts from 1st April to 31st March (in most school). But in the case of American education calendar usually begins from August or September and continue till May or June. Research made, and it was found that a majority of new students start in autumn so that it is a good idea for international students as well to begin university studies at that time.
Level of study
Generally, for the understanding of the American education system, there is a three-tier level of research in the U.S. and these areas:
2: Graduation in pursuing of Master Degree
3: Graduation in pursing of Doctorate Degree
These are the critical three level of study in the U.S. that students generally deal in that.
Characteristics of the U.S. education system
The first characteristics are classroom environment as it ranges to hundred students as well as small classes with seminar, lectures and discussion classes.
Secondly is the credit as each course consists of some confidence and these are calculated on a certain number of credit or credit hours. Generally, it has been estimated as no of lecture in a week to the student attend a conference in a week. Usually, a single course consists of the range of 3 to 5 credits.
Lastly but not least is transfer as if a student enrolls in a new university before finishing the degree. It generally means that student want to transfer and the most credit earned by a student can be used to another university in which it intends to move to complete a degree. That generally means a shifting of loans from one to other. This means that a student can transfer university to another university and it still a graduate within a specific time frame.
Types of U.S. Higher education
There are four types of U.S. higher education which are as follows:
- Firstly and most commonly is state college or university.
- Secondly a private college or university.
- Thirdly there is a community college.
- Lastly Institute of technology.
At last we can conclude on the base of above that we discuss about the concept of education system and then we understand how American Education system works with their key points, characteristics and finally the types of higher education in the U.S. so that we can go through each and everything and understand how it works and how it has been differentiated from other.
